Abstract
Hormuz occupied a distinctive position in the international trade network during the Ilkhanid era due to its strategic geographical location and its connection to the maritime routes of the Persian Gulf, the Oman, and the Indian Ocean. This study examines Hormuz’s role in international trade and the factors underlying its growing commercial importance. Using a historical method and a descriptive-analytical approach, it draws on historical and geographical sources, travel accounts, and recent scholarship. The findings demonstrate that Hormuz’s prominence resulted not merely from its geographical advantages, but from the interaction of strategic location, security, commercial facilities, merchant activity, and connections with regional ports and distant commercial centers. Hormuz served as an intermediary between commercial networks linking the Persian Gulf, the Oman, and the Indian Ocean, facilitating the movement of commodities, circulation of wealth, and integration of regional markets with wider commercial spheres. Moreover, the expansion of economic relations between the Ilkhanid realm and neighboring regions, alongside the growth of maritime trade, created favorable conditions for Hormuz’s commercial development. Hormuz emerged as a significant node in the maritime trade network of the Ilkhanid period, reflecting the combined influence of geographical advantages and the political and economic mechanisms governing regional commerce.
